Nothing is worse than thinking you are doing yourself justice by eating at the salad bar only to find you haven't lost a pound.

Salad bars are wonderful however there are many tempting high-fat and high-calorie items you want to avoid if you are watching your weight.

Definite Don'ts:
Potato, pasta, chicken, seafood and tuna salads are more than likely loaded with oil or mayonnaise and should be avoided like the plague!

Other Don'ts:
Stay away from the avocados (very fatty) and meat, or at least limit these! Eat only the egg whites of a hard-boiled egg and use cheese sparingly. Avoid marinated vegetables, butter-fried croutons and especially any creamy salad dressing! Try balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Lemon juice is also great on salads with no dressing.

Definite Do's:
Choose the fresh vegetables and fruits. In season fresh fruits can be as sweet as candy. Also eat legumes like kidney beans. Cottage cheese, especially fat free, is also fine.

The greener the better:
As a general rule when choosing a lettuce or greens, the darker green the leaves, the more nutritious the salad. Try romaine, Boston lettuce, spinach and all the others you'll find at healthier salad bars and at your grocer. You'll discover a world of new tastes.
